The IAP updates these recommendations regularly — the 2023 schedule, used through 2024 and 2025, reflects the latest research on when vaccines are most effective and which combinations are safest.

"Vaccines cause autism."
This claim originated from a 1998 paper that was fully retracted after it was found to be fraudulent. Dozens of large-scale studies involving millions of children across multiple countries — including India — have found no connection whatsoever between the MMR vaccine (or any vaccine) and autism. The original researcher lost his medical license for scientific misconduct. Vaccines are safe.
"My baby is getting too many vaccines at once — it will overwhelm their immune system."
A baby's immune system handles millions of foreign substances every day — bacteria, viruses, and allergens in the environment and in food. The antigens in the entire IAP vaccine schedule combined represent a tiny fraction of what the immune system manages daily. The schedule is designed this way deliberately so that protection is built while the immune system is at its most responsive. Combining vaccines has been extensively studied and proven safe.
"Natural immunity is better than vaccine immunity."
Natural immunity — acquired by actually getting the disease — sometimes produces a stronger response, but the cost is dangerous and potentially life-threatening illness. Measles, for example, can cause encephalitis, blindness, or death before the immune system has time to fight back. Getting natural measles also causes immune amnesia, temporarily erasing up to 73% of your child's existing immune memory. Vaccines give your baby the benefits of immune training without the risk of the disease itself.
BCG (tuberculosis), OPV-0 (oral polio), and Hepatitis B (birth dose) are given at birth as per the IAP schedule. These should be administered within 24 hours of birth, ideally within the first few hours.
The pentavalent vaccine protects against 5 diseases in a single injection: diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), and hepatitis B. It is given at 6, 10, and 14 weeks and significantly reduces the number of injections a baby needs.
At 6 weeks: DTwP/DTaP (1st dose), IPV (1st dose), Hib (1st dose), Hepatitis B (2nd dose), PCV (1st dose), and Rotavirus vaccine (1st dose — given orally) per the IAP 2023 schedule.
MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) is part of the IAP recommended schedule, given at 9 months and again at 15 months. While it is not legally mandated under Indian law, it is strongly recommended by IAP and UNICEF and is included in India's Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) as MR vaccine.
Contact your pediatrician immediately. Most vaccines can be given on a catch-up schedule — missing a dose does not mean starting over from the beginning. The IAP publishes a catch-up immunization schedule for exactly this situation. Do not skip vaccines; they are most effective when given on schedule, and delays extend the period your child is at risk.
